Netflix Can Now Automatically Download Movies and TV Shows for You

Available on Netflix app for Android, testing to begin on iOS.

With "Downloads for You," Netflix's Smart Downloads feature extends its horizons. It will now automatically download movies and TV shows that you would like, to assist you in situations where you are trapped without internet access or in a long wait like the evening commute. (Remember to fly to and fro for work? One of the few things I'm thankful to COVID-19 for is saving on commuting time.) Previously, the Smart Downloads of Netflix will uninstall the episodes you've watched automatically and download the next episode of said TV series. But movies were out of the question (or new shows). Netflix goes a step further with Downloads for You.

How to automatically download movies and TV shows on the Netflix app

  1. To get started, simply launch the Netflix Android app.
  2. Then, tap on the Downloads tab.
  3. There, hit the toggle next to Downloads for You.
  4. On the next screen, decide how much storage space you want to dedicate for Downloads for You. Netflix says 3GB is enough for 12 movies and TV shows.
  5. Once you've made up your mind, tap Turn On.
If you change your mind, you can always turn off the Downloads for You feature in the Netflix app. Or you can decrease the amount it takes from Downloads > Smart Downloads if you run into storage problems. Alternatively, just increase the storage space allocated to downloads for you, if you want more surprises. Manual downloads you initiate on the Netflix app will not use the storage space that you reserve for automatic downloads.

"We introduced Smart Downloads three years ago, so you can find the next episode of your favorite show, even when you're on the go," wrote Patrick Flemming, Netflix's director of product innovation, in a Netflix blog. Now, whether you're linked or not, we want to make it fast and simple to discover your next new favorite series or movie. We're releasing Downloads for You today, a new feature that automatically downloads recommended shows or movies based on your preferences to your mobile device.

Netflix's Downloads for You is available now on Android globally. It will soon enter testing on iOS. If you're wondering how much of a wait it might be, Netflix's Smart Downloads feature took nearly seven months to make the jump from Android to iOS.

Google is planning a new Silicon Valley campus that will include a hardware center.

According to CNBC, Google is planning a new campus in Silicon Valley that will include a new center for some of its hardware products. According to CNBC, Google has been buying land in northern San Jose, California, for more than $389 million, with preliminary plans showing a research and development center. The campus, termed Midpoint, will be located halfway between Google's current Mountain View headquarters and its San Jose mixed-use campus. Midpoint will have five office buildings connected by a pedestrian bridge, as well as three industrial buildings that will serve as a hub for its hardware division, including its Nest smart home products, according to planning documents. According to CNBC, the documents also show that Google has been planning the Midpoint site since 2018. Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Saturday, but given what executives have said recently, a campus with more space dedicated to hardware makes sense. Google's hardware chi...
